Your driver meets you in the Split Airport arrivals hall and the bags go straight into the boot. The route heads southeast out of the airport and onto the coastal road, passing through the outskirts of Split before the landscape opens up at Omiš — a small town wedged between a sheer cliff face and the mouth of the Cetina river, with a pirate fortress perched above the gorge. It’s worth glancing up as you pass through.
South of Omiš, the road enters the Makarska Riviera proper: a 60-kilometre stretch of pebble beaches and resort towns built against the vertical face of the Biokovo massif. The mountain’s highest peak, Sv. Jure at 1,762 metres, sits almost directly above the coast — the combination of deep blue water and pale grey limestone is unlike anything else on the Adriatic.
