From there you join the A1 motorway at Dugopolje and the route turns inland, away from the coast road and its summer traffic. This is the fast, quiet part of the drive.
The motorway crosses the Dalmatian Zagora — open karst country, stone villages, and vineyards, with the bare grey ridge of Biokovo rising on your left. Near Zagvozd the road disappears into the Sveti Ilija tunnel, more than four kilometres straight through the mountain, and comes out on the far side above Vrgorac. The motorway then drops you down to Ploče, where the flat green channels of the Neretva delta spread out and the route rejoins the coastal magistrala heading south.
Just before the bridge you pass Komarna, Croatia's youngest wine appellation — a hillside of organic vineyards planted into bare limestone, facing straight out at the Pelješac peninsula. Then the Pelješac Bridge itself: 2.4 km of open water in both directions. Say the word and your driver will pull over for photos, at no extra cost. The same goes for the Franjo Tuđman Bridge at the entrance to Dubrovnik, where the view back over the Rijeka Dubrovačka inlet is the one most people end up posting.
After the bridge it's the quiet hills of Ston and the Dubrovnik hinterland, then down to the coast. Terra Madre has been bottling since 2017 and its terrace takes in about thirty kilometres of sea plus the outlines of Brač and Hvar. Marlais winery, Ponikve — on the Pelješac side of the bridge, a seven-generation family cellar dug 110 square metres into the rock, with a tasting room above it. The family name is French; they settled on Pelješac in the early 1600s and the old Napoleonic road still runs past the door. Plavac mali is the wine to ask for. Trsteno Arboretum — roughly 20 km before Dubrovnik, a Renaissance garden laid out in 1494 by the Gučetić-Gozze family and the oldest of its kind on the Adriatic. Two oriental plane trees at the entrance are over five centuries old, and the stone aqueduct built in 1492 still waters the grounds. Game of Thrones used it as the King's Landing palace gardens. Shaded, quiet, and a genuine relief on a hot afternoon.

The city centre is a restricted zone. Here's exactly how it works, so nothing surprises you on the day.

1. Free hotel permit — the best option if you have it. If you're booked into a hotel inside the restricted zone, the hotel can request an entry permit for your vehicle at no cost. Your driver can contact the hotel to arrange it. One catch worth knowing: the permit is tied to a booked 30-minute arrival window, so it needs organising ahead of time. Leave it to the last moment and there may be no free slot, and traffic can eat into the window. Tell us your hotel when you book and we'll handle it early.

2. The €35 vignette — if a permit can't be arranged. Vehicles entering the strict city centre without a permit pay a €35 vignette, settled with the driver on the spot. This only applies if your accommodation is actually inside the centre. It isn't a Go Shuttle charge and it isn't part of the transfer price — we're telling you now so it isn't a surprise later.

3. Drop at Ilijina Glavica — no permit, no vignette. Your driver can stop briefly at the parking area in front of the Ilijina Glavica garage, unload your luggage there, and from that point the centre is a walk of about 7–8 minutes. Plenty of guests choose this and pay nothing extra.

Dubrovnik apartments are often up a staircase, and this is where transfers most commonly go wrong — travellers get left at the wrong end of a hundred steps with heavy bags. Send us the exact address when you book, not just the district. Wherever there's a suitable place to stop, your driver will help carry the luggage up.
